Bingo and Oklahoma: 2 Peas in a Pod

Oklahoma has for a long time been synonymous with Bingo. This is due to the fact that the American Indian tribes of Oklahoma have run Bingo sessions for ages. Patrons from all of the neighboring states get in vehicles and travel into Oklahoma to wager on Bingo on the weekends.

The 1988 Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) was introduced after a benchmark determination by The U.S. Supreme Court the year before. Since that instance, twenty three of the thirty nine American Indian bands of Oklahoma have introduced bingo halls. The Chickasaw were the 1st Oklahoma Amerindian band to take advantage of the gambling rules, and today run ten gambling halls of their own. Bingo was the game on which these gambling dens were built on. Electronic games such as slots weren’t approved, owing to the fact that they are believed to lead to gambling problems more than bingo.

In the past few years, Oklahoma law has altered to permit big American Indian gaming gambling dens. You will now see American Indian gambling dens with slots, video poker and 21 tables. Craps and roulette are not yet approved in the American Indian gambling halls yet, however this is simply a waiting game. Nobody can determine what having other gambling den games in the bingo houses will do for the appeal of bingo.
