Will the Anti Cigarette Law in the United Kingdom Force Bingo Players On to the Internet?
Much has been stated in the papers not long ago regarding the bingo industry being hit as a consequence of the cigarette ban in England. Things have become so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for massive tax breaks to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However can the web adaptation of this quintessential game present a lifeline, or might it never compare to its land based opposite?
Bingo is an ancient game usually played by the "blue haired" generation. For all that the game lately had experienced a recent increase in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlors in place of the bars on a weekend. All this is about to be reversed with the enacting of the anti cigarette law throughout England and Wales.
No more will players be allowed to smoke whilst dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of 2007 every public location will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most common areas where players enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be seen in Scotland where smoking is already not allowed in the bingo parlours. Profits have plunged and the business is absolutely struggling for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Surely they haven’t deserted this classic game?
The answer is online. People are now realizing that they can wager on bingo from their computer at the same time enjoying a beverage and fag and still enjoy big jackpots. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on cigarettes.
Of course wagering on on the internet could never replace the social aspect of going down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of men and women the rules have left a good many bingo enthusiasts with no choice.
