Might the Cigarette Ban in Britain Drive Bingo Players On to the Internet?
A lot has been reported in the press recently regarding the bingo industry being hit because of the smoking ban in England. Conditions have grown so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded massive aid to assist in keeping the industry from going bankrupt. However can the web variation of this quintessential game provide a reprieve, or might it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar peer?
Bingo is an familiar game historically enjoyed by the "blue haired" generation. However the game lately had witnessed a recent return in appeal with younger people opting to hit the bingo parlors instead of the discos on a Friday night. This is all about to be reversed with the introduction of the anti cigarette law all over England and Wales.
Players will no longer be permitted to puff on cigarettes while dabbing numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public place will no longer be permitted to allow smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most popular places where players like to smoke.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be observed in Scotland where cigarettes are already illegal in the bingo halls. Numbers have dropped and the business is absolutely struggling for its life. But where did all the players go? Surely they have not cast aside this age old game?
The answer is on the net. Players are now realizing that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a beverage and cig and in the end, enjoy huge cash rewards. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti cigarette law.
Of course betting on on the net could never replace the collective portion of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of players the governing edicts have left a lot of bingo players with little choice.
